Meet Billy, an adult Verreaux’s (Giant) Eagle-Owl, who came to Harnas Wildlife Foundation in July with suspected rodenticide poisoning. A vigilant farmer spotted a lethargic owl at his waterhole during the day and, noticing something was wrong, safely captured Billy and contacted Harnas for help.
Upon arrival, blood tests and a thorough clinical examination revealed serious concerns. After consultation with a specialist wildlife veterinarian in South Africa, it was suspected that Billy had ingested a rodent poisoned with rodenticide.
This unfortunate incident is not uncommon. Following excellent rains this year, rodent populations increased significantly, leading to more frequent human-wildlife conflicts. Birds of prey, which rely on rodents as a primary food source, are often affected in the process.
Billy’s story, however, is one of hope and success. Once he was placed on the correct treatment plan, his condition began to improve rapidly. Over the following weeks, he underwent rehabilitation and gradually rebuilt his flight muscles under careful supervision.
After a period of recovery and preparation, Billy was successfully released back into the wild, ready to soar again over Namibia’s landscapes. His journey is a reminder of the critical role that wildlife care and timely intervention play in conserving our natural heritage.
