Caught in a capture cage, a presumed conflict animal, Shakira’s mother was translocated to the N/a’an ku sê Foundation Wildlife Sanctuary. She had given birth to two cubs, with circumstances dictating that the mum be released in an area removed from conflict, the cubs remaining at the N/a’an ku sê Foundation Wildlife Sanctuary. The ideal scenario would have seen mother and cubs being released together, but the cubs’ survival depended on intervention of sanctuary staff.
 
The diminutive duo was consequently hand raised, their resulting habituation to humans preventing release. Instead, Shakira and her brother became magnificent ambassador cats, raising awareness for their wild counterparts.
