The year 2024 was a remarkable year for N/a’an ku sê, a year defined by determination and transformative progress. Dubbed “N/a’an ku sê 2.0,” the organisation expanded its reach and impact, strengthening its mission of sustainable conservation, animal welfare, and community upliftment in Namibia. Anti-Poaching Successes
N/a’an ku sê’s Anti-Poaching Units (APUs) accomplished an extraordinary feat in 2024, maintaining a record 4,343 days without poaching across the reserves since inception. Dedicated rangers patrolled more than 30,000 kilometres on foot, safeguarding Namibia’s wildlife. The specialised K9 unit and rangers apprehended 10 poachers and collaborated with Namibian police in key anti- crime operations, reinforcing their role as guardians of conservation.
Advancing Research with Camera Traps
Evidence-based conservation is central to N/a’an ku sê’s mission, and their research efforts soared to new heights in 2024. The research team analyzed nearly 1.8 million camera trap images across their research sites. This data serves as the foundation for informed policymaking, ensuring that conservation strategies are guided by science.
Coastal Conservation Impact
Namibia’s pristine coastline benefitted greatly from N/a’an ku sê’s Coastal Conservation Project. Volunteers removed an astounding 22.5 tons of pollution, averaging 350 kilograms of waste cleared weekly. This vital effort underscores N/a’an ku sê’s commitment to protecting Namibia’s landscapes for future generations.
Resolving Human-Wildlife Conflicts
N/a’an ku sê’s Rapid Response Unit tackled 441 human- wildlife conflict cases since inception, driving over 8,900 kilometres in 2024 to mitigate clashes between people and animals. Since its inception, the unit has collared 124 animals and released 208, offering them a second chance in the wild. Partnerships with farmers were strengthened by installing 76 camera traps on 19 farms, enhancing collaborative conservation efforts.
Animal Welfare and Veterinary Care
Animal welfare remained a top priority in 2024. Veterinary teams at N/a’an ku sê and Harnas provided exceptional care, vaccinating 892 animals against rabies and conducting 48 health checks. Highlights included translocating 24 rhinos, treating injured baboons, and rescuing animals caught in snares. Newly arrived animals, such as banded mongooses and warthogs, were prepared for release, reflecting N/a’an ku sê’s dedication to every creature in its care.
Landscape Conservation and Sustainability
Protecting Namibia’s landscapes is at the heart of N/a’an ku sê’s mission. In 2024, the organisation safeguarded over 100,400 hectares of land, creating safe havens for wildlife. Their sustainability efforts flourished, with all projects producing fruit, vegetables, and protein on-site. Neuras Wines earned international recognition, winning a double gold Michelangelo award for its fortified wine, a very proud moment in the history of Namibia.
Education and Healthcare
N/a’an ku sê’s four educational facilities supported 278 learners, nurturing Namibia’s future leaders. Healthcare efforts reached thousands, with the Lifeline Clinic providing free medical services to 3,211 patients and delivering 15,701 meals. Outreach teams travelled over 32,000 kilometres, ensuring even the most remote communities had access to care.
