TEACHING
You will spend Monday to Thursday assisting our teacher at the N/a’an ku sê and
Clabile Clever Cubs School on the grounds of the sanctuary. The school opened in November
2009 and was funded by the UK based Clabile Trust.
During the mornings at Clever Cubs you will assist our teacher in teaching two groups in
the pre-primary class (3-6 years). The school also has a nursery class (under 3 years) run
by our nursery assistant. Subjects taught include English, numeracy, environmental, arts
and crafts, circle games and physical activities.
In the afternoons, the older children return from the schools in Windhoek and you will
assist them with their homework as well as helping them to improve their English.
The children's primary language is the Bushman ’click’ dialect, some of the
children speak Afrikaans and their English is developing. Gaining the trust and friendship
of the children is an important part of the role. Planning, initiative and creativity are
vital skills and depending on your length of time with us you will have the opportunity to
inject your own ideas and experience to develop the school and improve the children's
education.
You can also help to plan fun activities for the children to take part in at the weekends
along with volunteers.
We run a sponsor a child initiative which helps to fund the continuous needs of the school
including our full time teacher as well as providing funding to cover the fees, uniforms
and transfer the older children into the mainstream schools in Windhoek and home on a
daily basis.
On Friday's and the weekends you will join the wildlife
conservation volunteers in their activities. You can choose to change the split in
activities to include Thursdays with the wildlife conservation volunteers if you prefer
you can spend your whole time with the school.
