VOLUNTEER ACCOMMODATION SocialTwist Tell-a-Friend

Accommodation on the farm
We have two large volunteer houses with three people (same gender) sharing each room. The single beds are comfortable with bedding provided (duvets and pillows). Electricity and hot water (showers only) is freely available, however please be aware that sometimes water levels are restricted and electricity has been known to cut off during storms. Power sockets for electrical items are available in only one of the volunteer houses, but can be used by all volunteers.

Accommodation at the Lifeline Clinic
While volunteering at the Lifeline Clinic in Epukiro you will stay in the volunteer house along with Anna, the project nurse and Stu, the volunteer coordinator. The accommodation is basic but clean with single beds and bedding provided. You will be in a room that sleeps two to three people. There is a kitchen and electricity in the house.

Food on the farm
Three basic meals are provided and typically include meat, vegetables, pasta and rice. A vegetarian option will be available. Breakfast is self service and includes toast and cereals. Lunch varies from sandwiches, wraps and burgers. Dinner is typically a hot meal or on occasion a braai (barbecue). Please advise any special dietary requirements on arrival at the project.

Food at the Lifeline Clinic
You will receive three meals each day; breakfast and lunch are on a help yourself basis whilst dinner will be prepared for you by Stu or Anna. They will appreciate your help with preparing this after a busy day at the clinic.

Facilities on the farm
  • Internet

  • It's time to get away from it all! Due to the costs incurred, internet is only available on the farm for emergency use only. If you are able to go into Windhoek on the optional Sunday trip, you will be able to pay to access the Internet from an internet café there.

  • Telephone

  • We suggest that you take your mobile phone with you - you will need to activate roaming on your phone. It is also a good idea to unlock your phone in case you get the opportunity to buy a local Namibian SIM card for about £15, which will allow you to call and text home cheaply and easily.
Due to the rural location of the project, the mobile phone signal is quite weak. There are a few spots around camp where you can get reception, but you will need to walk around a bit to find these!

  • Laundry

  • There is a free laundry service at the farm for all volunteers to use. However, you will have to hand-wash your own underwear and socks, so please bring travel wash with you.

  • Electricity

  • There is electricity at the camp, and sockets available, however the new accommodation does not have sockets in the room so you will need to share. The plugs used in Namibia are three large round pins (the same as the South African style) and you will need to bring an adaptor in order to charge electronic items such as phones and camera batteries. Please be sensible when using electricity, as it is much more of a luxury in Africa than it is in your home country. Also please be prepared as power cuts are common and you will need to be flexible about charging your items and bring spare batteries!

    Accommodation & Food in Namibrand
The current research base on NamibRand is a traditional farmhouse including sleeping rooms, kitchen, toilets and showers as well as a scenic garden. Bedrooms have beds and bedding but you will need to bring your own sleeping bag. On some nights we may track out to an area far away from our base camp and if it is too late to travel back we will make our camp out, sleeping in a tent or outside on the ground. You will prepare your food together with the research co-coordinator; cereal for breakfast, sandwiches for lunch and a basic dinner of pasta or rice and vegetables.
